Wroclaw is recognized as the unofficial capital of dumplings

Wrocław, one of the most beautiful cities in Poland, is becoming known not only for its picturesque landscapes and architecture, but also for its mouth-watering reputation as the unofficial capital of dumplings!

In 2023, Wroclaw residents ate an incredible 1.5 million dumplings! This is an impressive number, which shows the deep love of the city’s residents and visiting tourists for this dish.

Dumplings, also known as “pierogi,” are a traditional Polish dish that consists of small dumplings with various fillings such as meat, cheese, potatoes, fruit, and more. They can be served with various sauces, sour cream or fried onions.

Wroclaw is proud of its dumplings. There are numerous restaurants and cafes in the city that offer a wide variety of these delicacies. By the way, the Ukrainian language also has a word for dumplings in Polish. In the famous Ukrainian folk song “A Cossack loved a girl and cheese pierogies”, it refers to “pierogies”, i.e. dumplings, and not, as one might think, to grandma’s oven-baked pies.

As for Polish dumplings, whether you’re a local or a tourist, you should definitely try “pierogi” when visiting Wroclaw. It’s not just a dish, it’s part of the city’s cultural heritage.
